Do I need all 3 DVD's ?


I was going to download the Debian DVD iso but it 3 DVD's

debian-40r0-i386-DVD-1.iso 4588298 KB 4/7/2007
debian-40r0-i386-DVD-2.iso 4571754 KB 4/7/2007
debian-40r0-i386-DVD-3.iso 4463888 KB 4/7/2007

EEP!!! over 13 and a half gig against my 20 gig cap and it's only the beginning of the month : (

Do I need all 3 DVD's ?

In short, no. If you have broadband, all you need is the netinstall.iso CD. Everything will be downloaded over the internet, so you'll save a bunch of downloads. But if you do want the DVD, you can just download the first one. Debian packages stuff on the CD's and DVD's in order of most used components. So the base stuff is on CD/DVD 1, then alternative desktops, then most used applications, then applications used often, then least used applications, and on and on.

The netinstall iso is the way to go. You'll have a good working system and then you can pull down from the net the software that you want.
