Well, I tried reinstalling, but every time I connected /dev/hdb (I didn't want it erased during the reinstall), Grub and Grub2 both refused to boot with "error 2".
Even after using a rescue disk, putting /dev/hdb in fstab, mounting it, reinstalling grub, it still failed to boot with "error 2". So I'm worse off today than I was last week.
LILO, still an option on the Debian install, worked. Hi, LILO, long time no see.
one should not install grub2 if you are using ext4 atm.
my grub2 link in signature may help others?

WTF!!?!?!
Considering grub-legacy has to be patched to support EXT4 you SHOULD use grub2, I've just installed grub2 and it works fine, just had to much through different cds that worked.
I took a radical approach to testing ext4, installed lenny with grub2 on ext3, converted mounted drive and then rebooted. Since fsck is forced on reboot everything worked fine. I'm now running grub2 with ext4.
BTW there are stable Grub2 sources, hence why I had to use lenny, squeeze is broken.
