debian PPC install driving me nuts

hi

I've been trying to install debian ppc on two different macs, albeit "old world", but this is why I chose debian.
on one, the scsi cdrom is recognised at hw probe, but in the installer I can not choose cdrom as installation media.
on the other, w/ atapi cdrom, after formatting and mounting swap and root partitions it asks me for the location of 1.44/rescue.bin
why do I need a boot diskette? nothing in the docs about it and I can't find rescue.bin for sarge anyway
someone with an idea?
