You can check your iBook's processor type by clicking on the Apple symbol (assuming you're using OS X at the mo') and selecting "About this Mac". I'm pretty sure you'll find that the processor is a PowerPC G3.
I recently installed debian powerpc on my 500mhz ibook and it's working perfectly. There's some pretty good how-to's out on the web, just use google. If you need any more help, feel free to ask.
