Post Debian Linux freezes after a few minutes on X-Window

Hi guys,...

I come with a problem that never happenend to me before.............

I can't give much detail on how I got to this situation....the last things I can remember doing were: re-building my kernel to support a Fujitsu USB external hard drive - then installing the Demo version of Quake3 for linux.

Then what happens is I boot the machine, if I work on terminal mode (non X-Window) I can work just fine.....no prob, but if I go to work on X-Window, even if I don't run any programs or do anything within a few minutes the computer crashes - sometimes I cannot get even the mouse to move and, of course, I cannot switch to he terminal mode - thus the only way to restart the machine is through switching the machine off on the power button.

Is there any log file I can look into to get some idea of the problem? Could this be a graphical problem?

I know I am not giving much information here but this is because I can't think of anything else.

Any help would be greatly appreciated"!

Thanks you all.....

can you give little more info 'bout your kernel version and X. is your mouse/keyboard usb too? did it work with a selfcompiled kernel before?

btw. if it's a kernel prob you'll find info about the crash in /var/log/kern.log & /var/log/messages. but i think this rather is a prob in X (see /var/log/XFree86.0.log). to get a chance that the logfiles are actually written to disk don't turn off the power immediately after the crash or switch it off using acpi/powerbutton.

sl mritch.

I once had a similar problem when I had to convinece linux to use the Nvidia driver. Everything worked fine until a sudden crash.
I "solved" the problem by running the 'load optimal values' in my BIOS.
