i am going to do a I86 install and i am wondering if i will need to burn all 7 CD ISO's or could i just get by with one?
looking for a basic install with KDE.
' a basic install with just kde' is not quite right... a lot of packages go into that type of install by default. edit: (but no, you shouldn't have need for all seven... but...) :edit
i like to suggest people do a net install anyways -- you're going to have to download all the updates after you install the system if you download the CDs, so why not use a net disk, and put up a really basic system, and use that to install the packages you want? they'll be fresher that way...
lots of apps, lots of documentation, and lots of source code, probably... i remember some debian blow-hard getting all excited about 3 having 3,000 packages or something... i don't even remember other than it was ridiculas...
Don't download all the iso's unless you are trying to install on a system not connected to the network. The netinst CD iso image (http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/) is only about 120 MB and is the only one you need. It will install the base system and then everything else you need can be downloaded from the network. It will guide you through downloading packages after the first reboot after installation.
I have set up 2 machines at home w/ net install and its flawless. All are behind a router with DHCP and only one machine needed to have the network configured manually which consisted of entering a single ip address. I recommend it !
