You only need to pass the 'kernel name' if you are not currently booted into the new kernel. All you need in that case is the code listed below. I just did this tonight after doing a custom install of the Debian sources 2.6.12 kernel using the new gcc 4.0 environment.

And yes, it is a little easier, but I've also done it the 'Debian way' and the instructions are much longer than the actual steps. If I recall correctly, it is only a matter of four apt commands and then X reconfig if needed. I'd say either is a great method.

Code:
# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7676-pkg1.run -K

Drop to shell turned NVIDIA driver installation.

Thanks McCloud and Xian,

Not to beat this to a pulp or anything, but I had to reformat my drive and reinstall Debian. I want to try installing the NVIDIA drivers the 'McCloud and Xian' way (which looks alot like what is on the NVIDIA website).

So, If I'm starting booted up into a fresh debian 2.4.x load, I would just type the following:

Code:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7676-pkg1.run -K
What is the -K switch for at the end?

I've read that 7676 is buggy and you should use 7667 instead? Any thoughts on that?

Thanks guys.

No, if you want to install the complete nVidia driver you need to install it using the command
Code:
# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7676-pkg1.run
The -K option specifies that you only want to build the kernel module. You use that when, for example, you install a new kernel and the nVidia driver is already installed. In that case, you don't need to completely reinstall the driver, building the kernel module for your new kernel is enough. In that case you can use the -K option.

gdm stop

Hi

The problem is that if gdm stop is run, it looks in the path to find the first occorrance of gdm. So it complains.

You have to run it with command /etc/init.d/gdm stop OR cd into that dir and run ./gdm stop .

Hopefully this helps.
