Debian boots to L 99 99 99 99

I recently rebooted my debian 3.1 and got the following L 99 99 99 99. After researching, I tried to use Knoppix (Live CD) to boot and change lilo.conf. When I tried to make changes I get errors about not being able to open the vimrc file. I cannot save the file.

I was able to cd to /dev/sda3 and then chroot. It seems that I can change anything. I am new to Debian and am a little confused.

Does anyone have a guide to fix my lilo.

TIA

Mike

Make sure you have mounted the partition read-write before chrooting, and mount the proc filesystem on /proc. Next, edit lilo.conf as needed and remember to re-run the lilo executable before rebooting. 99% of L 99 99 99 errors are from failing to re-run LILO.
