Closing X / GUI

In Debian, what is the best way to completey shut down and close out of all X Windows? I want to install Nvidia drivers and need to shutdown X but I don't know how to do this. Is there a command or some thing? I don't need to edit the init.conf file since this will need to be just a one time thing.

Thanks for any help.

Ctrl-Alt-Backspace will kill the X Windows System.

If this goes back into the login screen (GDM?) or something you will have to make it go into text based.

I don't know how this works on Debian but in Slackware this would work:
Code:
telinit 3

Not so in Debian.

Use

/etc/init.d/kdm stop

or /etc/init.d/kdm stop if you use Gnome

You don't have to shut down X before you do this, although it is neat to do so. You can edit the conf file, and if it did't work, you end up in text mode anyway.

Beware, installing nvidia is not straightforward, and you need a special kernel version. There are a lot of howto's out on the net, google for it. I cannot find the page anymore I used for my own install.

I don't understand the difference between your two commands listed above. I am using Gnome so would would be the command?

I would assume /etc/init.d/gnome stop

The command to stop the Gnome login manager is:

Code:
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
A little keyboard slip by jlinkels I think.

Yeah, it is gdm. Stupid, but that happens when you copy&paste without thinking.
