Debian 7 is not testing, Jessie is testing. If you changed from Debian 7 which is Wheezy and also the current Stable to Debian testing which is Jessie what did you do to attempt this change?

i started with Debian 7 xfce, upgraded to 'testing' in order to try out E17 WM, which didn't work, then i changed to 'Jessie', but now i've got a broken Debian system whose menu, icons, taskbar all stopped working.
all of these is done through /etc/apt/sources.list replacing "stable" with "testing" then with "jessie" and run "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade "

Changing testing to jessie would have had no effect at all because testing is jessie.
At what point did the system "break"?
Have you tried reinstalling xfce using
as already stated at the moment jessie is testing. Anyway, to start debugging this you should look at your ~/.xsession-errors.
Evo2.
thanks, '~/.xsession-errors' shows that xfce can't load a module 'scim' (which i use to input multiple languages on my system, worked both in 'wheezy' and 'testing').
i then completely remove 'scim' 'e17' etc from my system, afterwards i could use xfce normally again
now reflecting back, during my change from 'testing' to 'jessie', i received some warnings
Code:
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/e100/d102e_ucode.bin for module e100
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/e100/d101s_ucode.bin for module e100
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/e100/d101m_ucode.bin for module e100
so i used following commands to locate the missing package 'nonfree-firmware-linux' and installed them, and afterwards my system was wrecked
