cannot start DNS service namedrndc connection refused

Named service not starting on Linux box. I'm running Debian Linux and I tried this

/etc/init.d/bind9 stop or start.

When I try to start it, it says that's it's starting but ports 53 TCP and UDP are not listening. I type in: netstat -an |more but I don't see port 53 listed there.

I get an error when trying to stop it.
namedrndc: connect failed: connection refused.

I've rebooted the machine and same thing. I have 2 DNS servers (master and slave) and it happens on both of them.

Did you install BIND through apt-get/aptitude, or did you compile it from source?

The rndc error in your title but never mentioned in the body would occur if you either failed to copy the rndc key correctly into the named.conf file, or if the rndc key was never created.

Peace,

Thumbs up

Actually I got it to work. There were duplicate records in the named.conf file. Once I deleted the duplicates, it started right up.
