Unhappy Can't hear midi's!

Hi ppl!

When i first tried listening to a midi file i got a "Can't open /dev/seqencer" error. I then installed and configured ALSA and it didn't complain anymore. But. despite the midi seems to be played, there is no sound in the soundcard. The same happends with legacy doom, i can hear the gun shots but not the music.

Any suggestions?
thanx in advance

Do you have Timidity installed? If not install that package and read through the documentation. As far as I know that's the only way to get MIDI support in Linux. Sorry I can't post more detail but I'm in a rush this morning. If you have trouble setting it up post back and I will try to help.

Unless you have an actual midi device, you need a software synthesizer (timidity). You will probably want to apt-get install timidiy with freepats (the set of instrument sounds, a patch set) and timidity-interfaces-extra.

After getting those installed, you can type on command line timidity -ia which will bring up a ncurses interface which is pretty self-explanatory (browse to midi file and play it).

Even if you have an actual midi device don't they like the proper drivers? I know that I never got MIDI working on my SB Live! card without Timidity, but then again I never tried that hard....

Hi, I got it working using timidity. But there is another problem:
This is an AMD64 system. I've got a chroot for 32bits. The problem is that 32bits apps wont work with the timidity ALSA interface.

what do i do?
thanx in advance.

Well, I have only a 32 bit system (was shopping for an AMD64 when I got laid off) and an SB live. All is well here. You are getting timidity in a 64 bit version or just running it 32 bit mode on the 64 bit system? That doesn't make nice with 32 bit alsa? Totally confused but I am sure help is on the way - can only offer morale encouragement at this point!
