beryl crashes, xgl fails
I have a Pentium D em64t with ati radeon x600 pci express graphics card and 1GB of ram. I recently installed debian etch with kernel 2.6.15-1 (amd64) and installed beryl following this guide-->
http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/I...eryl_on_Debian
adding this to my sources.list
deb
http://boisson.homeip.net/amd64/ beryl ./
After the installation when I typed "beryl" in the terminal I got a wabbly thing which I can only presume a splash screen. But X crashed and restarted.
Following several futile attempts, I installed the fglrx-driver from debian's repository and tried installing xgl following instruction from the later part of the above mentioned guide that includes the installation of xserver-xgl.
This time it started but all I got is a gray patterned screen which one usually gets after starting X with just the base system. I had mouse but it was round showing it was doing something. And it stayed like this.
So, any idea where I went wrong? or what should my next steps be in this regard?

I tried Beryl once on Ubuntu 6.10. You might take a look at Beryl howto's in Ubuntu Wiki - they are useful for Debian also. I remember that the HOWTO's told to use the Open Source radeon driver instead of the fglrx driver. I also doubt installing xserver-xgl is a good idea; I dont think Beryl requires a modified Xserver, as it basically just a window manager.

I recently installed debian because I had moved to Kubuntu dapper from debian just to see if beryl worked there. The result was not that good. Beryl failed to start. So I upgraded to edgy and the result was the same. I would have gone to feisty even, if the live cd had worked.
Call me childish but I really need to know that linux does better, regarding looks, than windows vista, which btw told me that the PC was low on memory when I tried to run a dvd!!.

what exactly is the difference between compiz and beryl? I noticed that compiz is in testing but beryl is not. What's the difference between the two?

There is very little difference between the latest development version of each except beryl has a much better settings manager.
The difference between the stable versions of each is pretty big, beryl has way more plugins and features etc.
The compiz version in debian repos is the old stable version unfortunately.
Many people suggest compiz is the more stable of the two but I have run both on 6 different distros and in every case beryl has given me less problems.

Shame, I went through the thread you mentioned and I think have discovered my problem.
when I have the composite enabled in my xorg.conf file I get these readings:
Quote:
debian:/home/robin# glxinfo |grep direct
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
debian:/home/robin# fglrxinfo
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.5.1)
However, when I have the composite turned off I get:
Quote:
debian:/home/robin# glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
debian:/home/robin# fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON X600 PRO Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6286 (8.33.6)
debian:/home/robin# compiz
/usr/bin/compiz.real: SmcOpenConnection failed: Authentication Rejected,
reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and
host-based authentication failed
/usr/bin/compiz.real: No composite extension
debian:/home/robin# beryl
XGL Absent, checking for NVIDIA
Nvidia Absent, assuming AIGLX
beryl: SmcOpenConnection failed: Authentication Rejected,
reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based
authentication failed
beryl: No composite extension
Is there anyway to have direct rendering with the composite enabled?

Are you using xgl instead of xorg? I believe it is still needed to get beryl working properly with ati.

No, Im using xorg. Here is my xorg.conf file:

# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using

# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.

# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated

I don't see any texture from pixmap lines which I believe the card/driver needs to be capable of this to use beryl without xgl.
Try this:
Code:
glxinfo | grep texture_from_pixmap
If there is no output I think you need to install xgl.
