Backports Kernel 2.6.38 & fglrx/ATI Catalyst 10.9 issue

Hi. I've upgraded my old kernel 2.6.32 to 2.6.38 from backports, and as in my previous attempts to do that i've got the same problem: video. fglrx just doesn't work with it. What do i do? By the way, good thing i can still boot into graphical environment, but there were cases when i really couldn't and i ended up in console which yet followed by a very soon reinstallation. It's something about headers. Any suggestions?..

What to do? Think.

Kernel headers, gcc and glibc make up the toolchain of your box. A jump from 2.6.22 to 2.6·38 implies an old distribution in place.

Now you can cd into the kernel top source, and run
Quote:
make clean && make headers_check && make headers_install
and you will have the latest headers in place and this might solve your problems. But if you have compiling to do of stuff of the vintage of your distro, it may barf on the newer headers. If you are compiling recent stuff only, the new headers should do. If not, people will be quick to correct me.

Yes you need to install the headers, but as with most things in debian they are packaged in the repos (in this case in the backports repo). fglrx installation is well documented in the debian wiki: http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary

I did install kernel headers (backports too). That didn't help. Actually when i only installed the kernel itself there were two errors, first one was VirtualBox and another one fglrx. They both "failed". With what - i can't remember, but i only recall that after i installed headers VirtualBox was "successful", as for fglrx - still "failed". I tried to compile fglrx from sources using Module Assistant - "failed" (some files are not found). Everything fails. So the only thing i could think of is to remove fglrx completely and re-install it. The rest is too complicated.

If you post the actual log messages of when things "fail" people are more likely to be able to help.

Cheers,
