Try this trick: http://rwxii.bitblaster.com/k/11-1-1.../permlink.hptb

Must admit I haven't configured apt like the webpage said and don't have the problems you have. I'm not sure what causes it exactly.

You might try adding the following to /etc/apt/apt.conf (create it if necessary)

Code:
APT::Cache-Limit "12500000";
(please note the semi-colon at the end)

I do not seem to be able to reproduce the problem on my machine (not sure why), but i did get a similar error once before (the part about MMap running out of room). I think I found this solution in the Apt-HOWTO http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/ap.../index.en.html

Hope that helps,

And you might also try updatedb. This needs to be done once in a while and cured some of my odd apt problems.

Mine is set to;

APT::Cache-Limit 50000000;

Works well.
What's with the " " marks in the answer above?

MEPIS, unstable, xorg, kde 3.4.2, apt junkie.
