I'm using lilo, after using apt to get the kernel image you have to run lilo. You will probably have to do the same with grub. Check the README that comes with the apt package. If you're using Synaptic you can see all the files each package puts down and easily find any and all documentation.
I just installed the 2.6.5 kernel and simply typed # update-grub to edit the file. That being said I'm having some problems with my mouse not working and XFree86 screwing me around.
Yep, be sure to do a update-grub after installing the new kernel. As for Xfree86 giving problems, during the config just choose the Vesa drivers, then either re-install the nvidia drivers from the libranet cd, or download them from the net (if thats what you meant by it screwing you around).
Turns out it was because hotplug was removed when installing the new kernel. I ran # apt-get install hotplug whilst using 2.4.19 and it allowed me to boot into 2.6.5 with no problems.

Howdy guys,
Another newbie here.....
I've just updated my redhat 9 kernel (2.4.8-20) to 2.6.5.
Everything went well until I came to the /sbin/grub-install, seems to me I have a missing parameter or something..... I just ignored that and rebooted
Now I get the word GRUB all over the screen when I tried to enter the bootloader menu.....
Did i mess up my grub.conf?
How do I edit a file under "linux rescue"?
