Alien converts to deb but they won't install

I've been trying to convert a few packages to deb using alien, most of them themes but, although they convert without any trouble, nothing seems to install.
I've tried about 8 themes this way and none have installed even though there were no errors reported, they just don't appear in the control centre and earlier in the week I tried 3 different programs (can't remember names at mo) and none of those installed either.

When you convert a package with Alien it strips the destination directory for install. If you look at the root of your partition you should find them there.

You can create symlinks from those directories to where the system expects to find them.

you can also use dpkg -L <packagename> to get a list of what was installed and where
