Can you explain a bit more about what you are trying to do. Are you trying to add a shortcut to the menu or the panel? Also what desktop environment or window manager are you using?

You can add applications to your GNOME menu by running an application called alacate (labeled as "menu editor" on some distros) which edits your GNOME menu.
