Sound on a Compaq 1245 and DSL
I know the sound works with linux on my old Compaq 1245, it works with ALSA driver snd_es18xx. This is under Xubuntu. Overall Xubuntu is still slow on the system, or should I say the hardware is slow.
I use this system mostly for testing network stuff.
I downloaded the latest DSL 3.1. It boots fine, once I figured out the best boot options. I can mount the HD partitions. I just can't figure out how to get sound working on it. I did a lot of reading and searching for a How-To get sound working on DSL, but have not found much. I have found some threads on sound and DSL, still havn't made it work on my Compaq.
Under Xubuntu I just modprobed soundcore, snd, and snd-es18xx, brought up XMMS and played music.
Under DSL I have tried used the ALSA option at boot time, under MyDSL loaded gun_utils.DSL , dsl_dpkg.dsl , alsadebs.dsl.
I can modprobe soundcore, and snd. I get various errors when I try to load snd_es18xx.
I found a thread indicating I needed to specify IRQ, Base IO address etc.
I went into the BIOS and found the following settings.
Base IO Addr 220-22F
IRQ 5
DMA Channel DMA 1
DMA Channel DMA 0
FM IO address 388-38B
MPU IO address 330-331
I tried a modprobe using this information, the module loads, but no sound.
What am I missing? Is there a How-To anywhere for DSL?
