Phone OS

Is there a viable operating linux system for mobile phones yet to replace android where one can choose which apps to use.
I'm using Mint Mate on the computer and love it and would like to do the same on the phone.

no, I don't think so. But you can check LineageOS probably.

There's a thing called the Pinephone, but I have no personal experience with it.

I think the key word in your questions is "viable." Android and iOS have such dominance that any competitor is unlikely to achieve more than niche market status any time soon.

Thank you all.
Many exciting leads there. Pinephone seems to have not been followed up for a year or two and my existing phone, a Samsung J50 is not listed as able to use it. Same for LineageOS.
But the Andronix stable looks promising.
The problem with my Samsung phone is Samsung just as the problem with my microsoft computer was microsoft. Linux Mint fixed that. I don't know that I could remove the Samsung OS and replace it like on the laptop though. The phone has only 32 gb storage so is limited in capacity.
Still trying to gt my head around the practicality of the process of getting a simple open source operating system to host the apps, including firefox, that I want to use.
