Problem opening pdf files - Evince mysteriously missing

Sorry, seems I managed to post this when testing different subjects - searching for similar threads ...

I'm trying to find out why Evince suddenly went missing.

I haven't actively (as far as I know) done anything to remove it, but in Synaptic evince-common (3.28.4-0ubuntu1.2) is what's installed. Not evince itself.

Not sure when this might have happened, one day I couldn't open pdf files anymore (but got to see other files, so unexpected results in a couple of ways).

Didn't make the connection at the time, but I noticed earlier that Scribus also disappeared, so my first guess would be that this is more of a general problem with som sort of dependencies rather than Evince or Scribus?

On the other hand, there would be more threads on this subject if this had happened to a lot of users.

I hope that fixing this is as simple as installing Evince again, but I would like to know what caused the problem in the first place.

Other than using eepDater, I've installed Master PDF Editor manually:
Code:
sudo dpkg -i master-pdf-editor-5.4.38-qt5.amd64
Files open fine in Thunderbird and in the file manager if I choose open with Master PDF Editor.

Please provide some context. Why precisely do think Evince went missing? Have you checked the package manager for information on Evince? And so on.

agreed that more info would be helpful. evince works on my 64-bit bodhi 5.1 install and running the commands listed (in bold), i get the following terminal output:
Code:
apt list evince
evince/bionic-updates,now 3.28.4-0ubuntu1.2 amd64 [installed]
which evince
/usr/bin/evince
a synaptic search for evince shows i have both evince and evince-common (same version numbers as above) as well as adwaita-icon-theme and libgxps2 installed.
