is bodhi affected by this ubuntu stuff stallman talks about?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CP8CNp-vksc

man i would hate it if it is. i am a huge believer in bodhi and moksha and the devleopers are friends. but if so ---- may have to think abot this ---

maybe debian?????

i am so pleased and the laptops run 100% on bodhi but ubuntu and amazon spware which i have read about in the past many times just makes it really disturbing to me.... thanks if anyone on the bodhi team have any answers...

I read about the ubuntu/amazon spyware before but I think that was in an older version, it's gone now. What I recall reading is the next version of ubuntu there was some amazon shortcut but no more spying on searches.

i am not swift enought to run pure debian or trisquel.... so i am forced due to dumbness to run linux the best way i can. and as i said - i do like moksha and bodhi a lot. just got into debian after much reluctance due to lack of knowledge.

Since you report running Debian alreadyz, why not just run it on everything?
The Ubuntu "spyware" thing did get resolved but..

I am not a big Ubuntu expert but I think this type of spying is/was relating to Unity desktop not the Ubuntu base. In case of Bodhi we rely on Ubuntu base (without desktop) and we add Moksha desktop as the layer above. If we are safe, I am not sure. In general there are many other ways how to collect data. Google, Facebook and others can collect data no matter what operating system you are using.
...and yes, we (Bodhi or Moksha developers) are moral and very friendly people. We do not spy you Feel free to check the code...

Stefan

PS: from my point of view Mr. Stallman is too paranoid. Maybe he is too important for society to be like this.

You are correct the "spying feature" was part of the Unity desktop but has be disabled by default since version 16.04

thanks - and yes stefan i understand and try not to use stuff as google for searches etc. i had to ask because it think this techno thing is starting to get way ot of hand.

i refuse and never used facebook and smart phones and a lot of other stuff totry to at least cut down on gaythering too much - you go to a stire and cctv and you walk down the street and cctv and you got to the bathro.... well you get what i am say and why I am asking. i have even had a drone fly over a few times while working in the garden/vineyard..... just imposing too much on my life and freedoms i would say.

There is sometimes not just about the data collectors. I am often astonished what are people willing to share on the facebook. People are crazy...

the reason i do not go to debian on all is that i really am most pleased with bodhi and literally have zero issues and love the feel of moksha. i also like the people . debian was something i wanted to know more about since it is the base of so many distro's that is have used so that was something i finally jumped in to try. i do like that too. if bodhi was to know be i would choose debian without an issue. i just am happy with bodhi for my needs.

i also have everything tweaked t my needs and likes and would not like to redo all systems again - being the it guy in the house. (kind of like torvald's comments. i just want it to run and the more consistent they all ae the better it is for me.

Its more a sign of Ubuntu's problems/catharsis. They were caught spying via Amazon, then claimed to correct it, however, it was still opt out if you used Unity, it should have been opt in from the beginning. They did this again with 18.04 with usage data collection, again it was opt out, instead of opt in.

Who knows what else they bundle in there and just have not been caught, yet. Or who knows what the next stage of data collection will be for Canonical/Ubuntu et al.

They certainly offer Snap packages that have Microsoft telemetry, so steer clear of those if you didn't want Unity in Ubuntu.

Unity, like so many of Ubuntu's homegrown offerings (Upstart, Touch-- Google is the same way of course) has folded, so you only have to worry about GNOME now. We won't get into hardcoded 8.8.8.8 but if you're going to worry about that, don't bother with your web browser (any.) Not saying these issues don't matter, though if you're going to worry about that one, you've just helped yourself to a mountain of other issues to consider. For many, this creates apathy. Personally, I just add it to the list of reasons not to misplace trust in these developers. Everybody phones home now, even when you don't expect it (not just for updates.) But Canonical is a little worse than average. Not a critique of Bodhi (probably not relevant to Bodhi either.)

i trust bodhi and the people; not sure what residual stuff is there from ubuntu. also my brief experience with snaps at the time was not good. i was also told that the snap apps packages were edited or not the same as doing it my synaptic or terminal. but maybe that was incorrect. but knowledgable people at the time seemed to agree with each other on this point. just saying. since so many distros are based on ubuntu there is a chance that they all have residual stuff in them.

I agree, however I am very glad Stallman (and others) are as paranoid as they are. Because of them, I'm sure the rest of us benefit, even those of us that let google and amazon spy on us, without the paranoid people who knows what these type of companies would get away with. Even Stallman runs an Ubuntu based distro, just one w/o proprietary software or "binary blobs" included.

Can you clarify? I've used a snap or two (under Bodhi) when no ppa was available, what "Microsoft telemetry" are you referring to? I thought snap was just a method to package linux apps (with dependencies) for more distros than deb packaging supports.
