Question How do I change default applications?

How do I change default applications?

I installed BodHi Standard.iso and have installed a bunch of things... most apps I can set as default through the file manager... but I can not work out how to change the default apps for somethings.

Example :
  • I installed "Firefox" but the default app is 'web"
  • I installed "Thunar" but the default application is still PCmanFM

I also couldn't work out how to delete web, as typing web into the terminal did not load it, so I do not know the name of the package to unintsall.

Anyway... is there a settings area that has all the default app listed that I can change, like the file manager and the web browser. Basically it still loads web and if I launch the file manager from an app, like say firefox go to downloads button, it loads the wrong one.

Yeah, but I can't uninstall "web" so it always seems to load. I have tried using the defaults.. but there are only a few options there.. not like say PDF files and stuff. Also I have set the file thing (or so I think) and it still loads the otherone. I guess i need to uninstall them?

if you launch that browser and then right-click on it's name in the shelf, you will see a version of it's program name. it's not simple to find the actual program name you would need to remove it which is epiphany-browser.

for specific kinds of files (like pdf's or mp3's) you should be able to right-click on the file's icon in your file manager (at least i know this is all true with pcmanfm, the default), select properties from the menu and set the "open with" field to the program you want.

it would be helpful to check.

i am not sure on that one. i don't believe i have ever installed another file manager on bodhi and i almost always launch firefox from favorites.
it might help to know which files you are trying to open (if something other than pdf's) or in what situation web (epiphany) opens when you would prefer firefox to do so.

Check out this link

It's basically the same command line program commands, just need to do your research on which apps you're changing to default to.

while i think it can definitely be helpful to know it is an option to use the command line to work with the mime types, the first time i looked into them i definitely had trouble figuring out exactly which ones i needed to work with. taking a look at the presently set associations in ~/.config/mimeapps.list (i believe it was rbtylee who shared that location in a previous thread) helped me get an idea about which ones i needed to change.

i forgot to include that i noticed mime type associations when i was looking in a .desktop file (/usr/share/applications) earlier so you could probably work with those if you wanted to change some things as well. these are the ones listed for web (epiphany):
Quote:
MimeType=text/html;text/xml;application/xhtml+xml;x-scheme-handler/http;x-scheme-handler/https;multipart/related;application/x-mimearchive;message/rfc822;

Doesn't Bodhi use "default applications" or "prefered applications" like other desktop environments do?
I know e.g. XFCE has a GUI dialog for that.
Try to find it in the menu.

Ahh yeah, that's why I said do some research on it. That's what I'd be doing. Whence you find the search for options and understand the Syntex.

You can use the oops error messages to debug yourself and figure it out. Right. I mean you are still in learning mode, yes? We all should be, actually. Nevertheless, do some research, that too us part of learning how to use, and fix, and modify your Linux box.

Mime types editor, xfce in slackware has one. Check your disto repo. You can edit it in that and.
