Itching to write a new GPC article

Posted 01-31-2015 at 04:41 PM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)

It's been more than two years since I wrote something about the General Purpose Cartridge for military rifles http://ciar.org/ttk/mbt/guns/gpc.2012-10-23.html

I wanted to hold off so I could improve my ballistic analysis software, collect more empirical evidence, and learn something about the GPC candidates and legacy cartridge upgrades under development by various military institutions, but these developments have been slow in the coming.

When I've had time to spare...

Time::TAI::Simple

Posted 07-30-2014 at 10:09 PM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)

Two things: First, my wife tells me this blog's interface sucks, and she hates trying to read it. Apparently it's horrible for users who do not have an LQ account. I'm kicking the tires on some alternatives.

Second, I've uploaded Time::TAI::Simple to CPAN. It provides a high-resolution count of seconds elapsed since the beginning of the epoch, much like Time::HiRes, but un-"corrects" for the IETF's leapsecond adjustments.

Datashack Stirrings

Posted 07-20-2014 at 08:54 AM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)

One of my ongoing projects, for the purpose of facilitating other projects, is the conversion of our wellhouse to a "datashack" and light workshop. The goal is to run various computers in it without introducing undue noise or heat to the main house.

Posted 02-05-2014 at 04:04 PM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)

Because none of us have infinite time and money to throw at our computer hardware, it's nice to be able to look at a benchmark and gauge whether it's worth it to spend a little extra cash at a more powerful CPU, or one with a different memory subsystem, or a solid state disk, etc.

For this, we have system benchmarks.

For a system benchmark to be useful to a person, it must measure the system's capability to perform the kinds of tasks that person needs their system to...

Some Observations Regarding NSA Surveillance

Posted 10-26-2013 at 01:43 PM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)
Updated 10-26-2013 at 01:44 PM by ttk (Adding categories)

Some things to keep in mind regarding the mass hoovering of data communications a la Room 641A:

Communication lines transport packets of data, each of which contains metadata (including identifiers for the origin of the packet and its destination) and data (voice, video, internet traffic, etc). Collection software would inspect each packet and append entries to its own data store, including at least the source, destination, and time the packet was inspected (and possibly additional...
