Notes on building a 64 bit slackware machine

I just bought a bunch of parts and built a 64 bit machine:
Intel Core i5-2500k processor
Intel DP67BG motherboard
8GB DDR3 memory
120GB Solid State Disk (SATA 6Gb/sec)
DVD writer (SATA 1.5 Gb/s)
MSI 3070 wireless dongle (comes with motherboard)
Geforce 8400GS PCI-e video card
I am running the Slackware64-13.37 stable release on it, and discovered a bunch of things that others might find helpful. Subsequent entries will discuss each of these.
The machine is up and running, but not without some heartburn...
