Minimal Slackware installation for network appliance or virtual machine

After a recent thread about minimal Slackware installations, I thought I'd give this a go.

I'm not really in favour of doing less than a full installation, because Slackware isn't designed to be installed this way. This is offered completely without warranty. I'm not responsible for you breaking your system if you try this.

With that out of the way, I got a basic installation of Slackware64-15.0 with networking, ssh and ntp in 315Mb.

These are the required...

Script to mount remote NFS shares at boot after the VPN comes up (Slackware64)

I use NFS shares over a VPN for offsite backup. Until now, I've been mounting the shares manually after logging in.

This script assumes that you have an entry in /etc/fstab which uses the "noauto" option and is set to mount the share under /mnt/remote_nfs.

I've added this to /etc/rc.d/rc.local. It's for OpenVPN, but you could just as easily substitute any other VPN.

There might be better ways to do this. Please drop me some hints if there...

eLILO, UEFI & Slackware64

There seems to be some consternation and misunderstanding around the transition from MBR to EFI. This is probably due to the fact that MBR has been around forever, and is quite familiar to anyone who has been using a computer booting anything but Windows at any stage in the past 40-odd years.

I'll simplify the biggest differences by saying that on an MBR system, the BIOS looks for a boot loader which has been written to the Master Boot Record of a bootable primary partition on the...

How to get Corel Linux working in a VM on Slackware64

Corel Linux was a commercial Linux distribution, which was quite well polished and capable as a desktop OS. It was removed from the market shortly after Microsoft became a minority 'non-voting' shareholder in Corel. I'm not saying that the two incidents are necessarily connected at all, but to the casual observer the timing does appear to be somewhat coincidental.

The major differences between Corel Linux and other distributions available at the time, were that Corel Linux was clearly...

How to get StarCraft (1998 version) working on Slackware64

Posted 06-14-2021 at 02:03 AM by rkelsen

This requires a working installation of Wine. See previous blog entry for how to get that.

Step 1. Mount the StarCraft CDROM
Step 2. $ wine /mnt/cdrom/setup.exe
Step 3. Exit installer. Do not click on Play Starcraft at this point - you'll be disappointed with the results.
Step 4. Copy /mnt/cdrom/install.exe to /home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Starcraft/StarCraft.mpq
Step 5. Umount & eject the CDROM
Step 6. Obtain the v1.16.1 (last official)...
