mc2 (makefile creator 2) was created and developed right here at linux questions. It is a terminal app with some gui features and generates makefiles like automake does, but much more simply, using your own directory structure to organize builds -- even very large projects -- super-easy.

Also recommended are kdevelop3 to replace that DOG they now use in kde, and kdbg version >= 5.0.
You're not likely to find kdevelop3 anywhere anymore though it's the best IDE/program editor in linux. So here's a deb package to load it into /opt/kde3 folders along with some other junk that you're not likely to need, but it's there if you want it. (One exception is the kregexeditor plugin for kdevelope. You'll like it. What in the freaking world is KDE thinking of in replacing that cool graphical regex editor with VI mode????:??)
I guess they don't know who their users are OR the don't expect linux newbees to EVER become developers? [That's my guess.]
Here's kdevelop3 (debian package, use alien if you need it as an RPM)

There's a kdevelop3 d/load link there and also some help if your kdbg version doesn't work. Retro is sometimes good, no? Revert, young man, revert... until they get gdb and kdbg in sync again.
