Notice: Spoon measurement : 6ml

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup Yellow Split Pigeon Peas lentil (AKA Toor dal in Hindi)
  • 3/4 spoon small yellow Mustard seeds (AKA Sarson in Hindi).
  • 1 and a half medium Green chillies (AKA Hari mirch in Hindi).
  • 1 spoon thick Tamarind syrup. (AKA Imli ka pani in Hindi). (No, this ingredient can NOT be skipped.)
  • 1 spoon Sambar masala. (No, this ingredient can NOT be skipped.)
  • 1/4 spoon Turmeric powder (AKA Haldi in Hindi).
  • 1 medium Onion.
  • 1 small Tomato.
  • 1/2 spoon Salt.
  • Oil for frying onions and tomatoes.

Directions:
  • Yellow Split Pigeon Peas lentil need to be soaked in water for half an hour. After half an hour, put it in the pressure cooker on the gas, and let it get tender.
  • Chop the Onion, tomato, and Green Chilies finely.
  • Put the Mustard seeds in the preheated oil and let them fully crackle.
  • Add Green chilies, and fry them till they turn florescent green.
  • Add Onions and Salt, and fry till Onions get golden brown.
  • Add Sambar Masala, and fry for a few seconds.
  • Add Tomatoes, and fry till they get mushy.
  • Add cooked Split Pigeon Peas only. Do NOT put in all its water at a time. Decide the consistency you want and add the remaining water accordingly. This recipe if made too watery won't taste too good, IMO.
  • Add the Tamarind syrup. Let it boil for few minutes.
  • Serve hot with boiled rice.
Serves 2.

P.S.
No, I haven't forgotten Garlic, Ginger, Pepper and all. This South Indian recipe doesn't need them. In fact putting them in it may spoil its authentic South Indian taste.

Besides, I have also seen many people putting vegetables in this lentil. That's their taste. I don't prefer it that way.
