Well, I want a different name for the common "newbie" and for want of a better one I chose "green horn".

I started linux just by curiosity when Mandrake 7.2(I can't be sure of the version-it's been quite a while since!) was included in a UK based pc magazine accompanying CD. It was a limited version of the distro since I learned later on that Mndrake usually comes in 3 CDs. So without knowing anything about linux I just installed what I had. Luckilly I chose to preserve the windows partition-I think it was win 95 at that time. I tried linux and forgot about it for a while. Then I discovered knoppix, again thru a free magazine CD and from that time on have always been using live CD version of linux. From time to time I encounter several windows pc that are unable to boot or have system erros and have used knoppix cd to repair the errors.

Now I am using a laptop more than a desktop and have since used a knoppix derivative called Kanotix. Works well with my Toshiba laptop-detecting everything including the inboard modem.
BTW, knotix is now installed in a separate partition on the laptop.
