Can you check by entering in terminal if sound-theme-freedesktop is installed:

alps install sound-theme-freedesktop

Then you can choose system sounds in alsamixer. If sound theme is installed and there is no sound, I am running out of clues here because you say you are getting sound output in vlc but nowhere else.

For what its worth can u also try rebuilding the kernel. Use the same config as in the /boot directory. Sound drivers are built as modules in this config. Try building it with y option. Maybe it is being caused by a driver conflict. Let's just rule this possibility out.

Also if you can post the output of these commands so that I can inspect..

lspci
lsmod
dear

I would look into it. Two of my laptops are in the middle of a build. Once either one of them is done I am going to inspect the config try rebuilding and testing and then report back to you. Though I do not have the same hardware as yours, I would still try figuring out what could be wrong.

Thanks for your patience:-)

Hi jep12345678,

In the dmesg output I see these lines towards the end:

[ 15.893771] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC1D0: HDMI ATI/AMD: no speaker allocation for ELD
[ 16.194744] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC1D0: HDMI ATI/AMD: no speaker allocation for ELD
[ 16.495723] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC1D0: HDMI ATI/AMD: no speaker allocation for ELD
[ 16.796689] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC1D0: HDMI ATI/AMD: no speaker allocation for ELD
[ 17.097663] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC1D0: HDMI ATI/AMD: no speaker allocation for ELD
[ 17.398645] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC1D0: HDMI ATI/AMD: no speaker allocation for ELD
[ 17.699606] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC1D0: HDMI ATI/AMD: no speaker allocation for ELD
[ 18.000571] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC1D0: HDMI ATI/AMD: no speaker allocation for ELD

Those seem to be the cause of the issue I suspect. Then I googled for the following:

snd_hda_codec_hdmi HDMI ATI/AMD: no speaker allocation for ELD

and lots of search results appeared, most of them telling that its a kernel bug. A quick workaround might be to the following:

xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio on
or
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio auto

See if that works. In case it does'nt then please try rebuilding the kernel.

I had seen few people facing audio issues and this seemed to have resolved the same:

mkdir src
wget https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/ker...nux-4.5.tar.xz
tar xf linux-4.5.tar.xz
cd linux-4.5

cp /boot/config-4.5 .config
make menuconfig

Now go to Device Drivers and select it. Sound Card Support would be <M> press spacebar to change to <*> ---> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture change from <M> to <*> ---> HD-Audio ---> Inside HD-Audio change all <M> to <*>. I am not sure which one is your HDMI driver. Try changing all of them to <*>. Then save your config and exit.

make "-j`nproc`"
make modules_install
make firmware_install
cp -v arch/x86/boot/bzImage "/boot/vmlinuz-4.5"
cp -v System.map "/boot/System.map-4.5"
cp -v .config "/boot/config-4.5"

dracut -f /boot/initrd.img-4.5 `ls /lib/modules`

Then reboot to see if that helped...

Can you try checking idf pulseaudio is running:

pulseaudio -C

Also try installing pavucontrol from:

http://freedesktop.org/software/puls...rol-3.0.tar.gz and running pavucontrol to see if you can change the devices settings in pavucontrol. I do not have a script for pavucontrol right now. I would shortly create one so that you can update it. Meanwhile, I guess:

./configure --prefix=/usr
make
sudo make install

should be enough for the installation. Once installed, you can check if pavucontrol can help you make changes to HDMI output.

Please also check if you current user is in the audio group:

groups <username>

Please give me some time, I would try pavucontrol and then upload the build script.

try seeing if pulseaudio comes up by:

sudo pulseaudio --kill
sudo pulseaudio --start

I meant I would upload the scripts so that pavucontrol can be installed. Then you can run it by doing:

alps install pavucontrol

I am working on the script right now. Would upload in some time

Well, pavucontrol seems to be generating a lot of errors during build. I am trying to figure out what that means. I also checked in vlc preferences in the Audio tab, what is the Output Module selected in your case? Is it set to automatic? In case it is set to automatic, then try setting to Alsa Audio Output and then change Audio Device to HDMI and then try playing audio. This is just to eliminate alsa from the scene. There can be two reasons this is working in vlc and not in firefox and the sound is playing through speakers but not through HDMI. alsa or pulseaudio.

If you change the audio output module in vlc to alsa audio output and then you get no sound then it implies that issue is with pulse audio and we can work on getting it right.

Also what happened when you did this:

sudo pulseaudio --kill
sudo pulseaudio --start

Ok.

I am running out of options here. Since last hour or so, I am trying to build pavucontrol with no results. There are a lot of errors and not much help from google. I have a strong belief that its pulseaudio that is the cause of the issue though without pavucontrol running its difficult to do so. I am trying another command line pulse audio mixer. Let me see how it works. Would reply shortly
