Problem with OOo 2.0
Hi guys, i just installed AL (7.0) today, upgraded to 7.1, installed 'openoffice-base', gave me an error about java, installed 'jre2', and still is giving me the same 'internal error' message. Any words of wisdom? Thanks

That's strange, I have openoffice-base 2.0.1-1 installed and no java or j2re. Which commands did you use to install?
ps: you'll probably get more replies on the arch linux forum : bbs.archlinux.org

Did you guys read the output pacman dumped after installing OOo? It told you to go read the wiki page on install OpenOffice because there is some extra stuff to do,you obviously haven't done it and you will continue to get that error until you do.
wiki clicky
I hate to sound like a prick but if you don't read the instructions then you don't really have a foot to stand on when something doesn't work.

Sorry about the delay, i've been busy at work.
You're absolutely correct, i never saw the pacman instructions because i didn't hang around watching the screen. I did some yard work and came back when it was done, it never crossed my mind that an app already in the repositories would have to be worked on. My fault.
Now why is OOo in the repo when it is not installable the usual way without doing additional editing is beyond me. Why not leave the previous version of OOo and let the users have a workable app?
I like Arch very much, the installation and the configuration in /etc/rc.conf are great. Obviously it's still young, not even version 1.0 . It badly needs the equivalent of 'localepurge' in order to keep it trim and mean. I have Arch installed at home, i did a minimal install (base plus a few basic apps) and am using 1.3 GB of the drive. I try to keep it slim but that's the best i can do (pacman -S --clean) (pacman -Rcs <app>)
At work, i use Debian Sarge (same installation, same apps, and only uses 752 MB of space. I use (dpkg -P <app>) (localepurge) (deborphan) (apt-get clean). So, IMHO, Arch is still bloated because of its inability to get rid of the crud, but it's getting there. The AUR apps should be moved as soon as they are fit to be used.
This is one distro i will keep in my box.

Hey macondo, I feel the same way about arch. It uses more harddrive space in comparison to debian if all you need are the files needed to run the programs. In arch the stuff needed to compile is always included.
In debian a package is often split in two: gtk and gtk-dev for example. It's very nice if you never compile.
What I miss from debian is this:
-no split up packages (x and x-dev)
-no localepurge or deborphan
-not as many packages
-not as many supported architectures
-no /usr/share/doc (I don't really care about this one though)
Still I prefer arch on my faster machine. It's much easier for me.

I've never used Debian so I'm nore sure wxactly what that does but pacman can purge your cache for you (pacman -Sc || pacman -Scc) and find orphacn packages (pacman -Qe).

Bah, perfectly understandable. When you aren't on a 10Mbit connection (1.5Mbit here) then the 100-ish MB for OpenOffice still takes a bit of downloading

This really ought to be in another thread, but never mind.
When entering your password at the command prompt, Linux and other UNIX-like OSes do not normally echo any characters to the screen. It's like a more extreme version of the way in Windows you just get *s (or, more recently, black circles) instead of the letters you typed; in Linux it displays nothing. Just type your password and press enter; don't worry about whether any letters appear on the screen.

@macando
It would help to know the exact error message, but if you got a "cannot find java jre" related error message (which is what I got), then just ignore it, start OpenOffice 2.0 and then specify the location of the jre installed on your system in the options menu.
@nooblet01
I think if you don't know these things before starting with a distro like Arch, you're going to have a very frustrating experience and get nowhere very quickly indeed. I would recommend an easier distro to start with, such as SuSE or Fedora. Just my two cents.
Nonetheless, if you are feeling masochistic, have you at any time tried entering "root" without a password, just like it says in the Arch Linux Installation Guide?
