Installing a package with pacman.

Hi: I read in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/pacman:
Quote:
To install a single package or list of packages (including dependencies), issue the following command:

# pacman -S package_name1 package_name2 ...
So what does the warning mean here?:
Code:
[root@revenge Downloads]# ls -l xf86-input-synaptics-1.9.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
-rw-r--r-- 1 semoi users 54932 Apr 14 19:55 xf86-input-synaptics-1.9.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
[root@revenge Downloads]# pacman -S xf86-input-synaptics-1.9.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
error: could not register 'spooky_aur' database (database already registered)
error: could not register 'revenge_repo' database (database already registered)
error: could not register 'spooky_aur' database (database already registered)
error: could not register 'spooky_aur' database (database already registered)
error: target not found: xf86-input-synaptics-1.9.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
warning: 'xf86-input-synaptics-1.9.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz' is a file, did you mean -U/--upgrade instead of -S/--sync?
[root@revenge Downloads]#

You don't need to download the packages yourself (not this one anyway as it is in the repo). You want to run something like this, and pacman will download the packages automatically.

Code:
# pacman -Syu xf86-input-synaptics
You only need to use the -U option when installing a package that is unavailable in the repo.

Thanks, pacman did its work. Now the problem is the touchpad is irresponsive. As I know it is Synaptics I therefor installed that driver. After the pacman install I rebooted just in case. However, in Settings>Mouse and Touchpad there's only one device, the mouse. Why does the touchpad not appear? And of course the touchpad is still irresponsive. By the way, how do I get syntax correction with Firefox Quantum 59.0.2 running under Xfce 4?

EDIT: As learned in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Touchpad_Synaptics I did this:
Quote:
The primary method of configuration for the touchpad is through an Xorg server configuration file. After installation of xf86-input-synaptics, a default configuration file is located at /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/70-synaptics.conf. Users can copy this file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and edit it to configure the various driver options available.
I did not edit anything as there is a lot of uncommented commands already. However still the mouse is irresponsive.

Hey stf92,

libinput is slowly becoming more of a standard than synaptics, and the proper packages need to be installed and configured for your hardware.

I would read up on libinput in the Arch Wiki, but as a starting point, both the libinput and xf86-input-libinput packages may be required.

Cheers.

  1. local packages are installed with -U, not -S.
  2. those repos look positively dangerous. op is not using archlinux but some undisclosed arch installer thingie.
