Linux program read and play mp3/mp4 file on other than its FS

How inefficient is Linux program keeps reading and playing MP3/MP4 file on NTFS than that on Linux native file system?

I store lots of media, both audio and video, on external hard drives, most of them formatted NTFS.

I have never encountered any issues playing the media with Linux media players.

The ntfs-3g is a FUSE i.e. userspace filesystem and therefore will be slower then something native which is kernel based.

I doubt it will be noticeable. Its one of those try it and see what happens.

I think what you're asking has little to do with media playback, and everything with filesystem reads? I.e., how do file read speeds differ between NTFS and ext4? Or did you have some other "Linux native file system" in mind? They might also perform differently.

Generally speaking, these reads must always be significantly faster than actual file playback. I'm not sure what sort of "inefficiency" you have in mind there.

A slow USB connection could be a much more significant bottleneck.
