Using xlc libraries with gcc compiled apps

I have just started developing on AIX 5.3 using gcc and the GNU tools. I am still grappling with the basics.

Is it possible to link precompiled libraries created with xlc with a gcc built app? I have read that you cannot link using ld from gnu, I am sure I also read that mixing gcc and xlc compiled code was not possible.

In particular, I want to use xerces-c which only has binary releases built with xlc. I have tried to build from source but that is causing me problems. So, I am looking to take the path of least resistance.

Thanks in advance.
