Question Adding a disk to 7044 170 AIX 5.2

Hi,

I have a RS/6000 7044 170. It has three disk bays and one 9 gb disk. I added a second disk with no problem. I then added a third disk and when I try to configure it I get the following message when I select "Configure a
Defined Disk" in smitty.

Command: failed stdout: yes stderr: no

Before command completion, additional instructions may appear below.

Method error (/etc/methods/cfgscdisk):
0514-047 Cannot access a device.

A "List all Defined Disks" shows:

Command: OK stdout: yes stderr: no

Before command completion, additional instructions may appear below.

hdisk0 Available 10-60-00-4,0 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive
hdisk1 Defined 10-60-00-0,0 Other SCSI Disk Drive
hdisk2 Defined 10-60-00-6,0 Other SCSI Disk Drive

I have checked all physical connections several times. Hdisk2 is identical to hdisk1. The system uses hdisk1 with no problem, it can see hdisk2 but generates the above message when I try to configure it. I did a "smitty cfgmger" with CD 1 of the AIX 5.2 set. I also have cfgmgr -i hdisk2 successfully. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I wonder if there could be a hardware problem with either the disk or the connector. If you are able to, could you try connecting hdisk1 to the third slot and hdisk2 to the second slot to see what you get an error on, if anything.

You could also try running diags (just type diag and follow the instructions, if you haven't done it before).

Fixed RS/6000 7044 Disk Problem

Thanks for your reply and suggestion to swap the disks in the disk bays. I went back again to do that and discovered that there was a small jumper that was not connected correctly on the disk in the second bay. I checked all jumpers after that and everything worked okay. Thanks again.
