File Commander, which I started using when I began using OS/2 as primary OS in 1997 as an upgrade from DesqView and Norton Commander. I use MC nearly as much.

For some reason bash isn't on this list, and there isn't anything even close to choose from. Skipping this poll.

Krusader for most of my file manager needs, but I'll run dolphin for browsing my photo directories with previews enabled.

I voted for xfe. worker is cool though. the best file manager is UNIX (R).
additionally, I have used xfiler, but it is not really maintained.

By the way, I now rely on command line/shell and «lf». With a little bit of tweaking I have a preview of most files (pdf/text processing/plain text/images/videos) while still using my keyboard.
Feeling like an old-timer, I've got the impression I'm more able to use my keyboard than my mouse... [as I'm retired I do not allow myself to feel «productive» anymore).

This and backup manager (backup management being largely just a subset of file management) are two items where 'none' would be a good voting option to have. Most FM tasks beyond basic renaming (for which 'mv' or 'rename' are usually pretty easy with select-and-paste), especially backups and deleting obsolete backups, evolve patterns that are very well supported by shell scripts using 'cp [-au]', 'find [-type] [-mtime] etc', 'if [-e] [-nt]', 'stat' etc. After a few years, some custom compiled code will get in on the act, eg for cleaning undesirable characters from downloaded file filenames. From there on, everything is quick, easy, visible and reliable. (Assuming that you have a good infrastructure of aliases and/or shell functions for getting around your file system, which really is far quicker than MS-style point-and-grunt tools.)

Agreed! My main use for a file manager is interacting with GUI programs. Also, If I have been really lazy naming files (again, a GUI problem) then a file manager can be helpful.

I voted for nnn, but I recently learned about this, which might be a contender for next year:

They're all pretty much the same unless you're getting crazy.I got some Qterm and LXterm. They're fine. MX has Xterm and Alacritter or something I did just for the heck of it...they're fine. Cant recall what the Cinnamon used on LMDE ?

With a name like RTFM it ought to have a man page! Maybe I should open an issue
