not that far back (early 2000s).
current seamonkey -mail has tabs and really reminds me of a not-too-old thunderbird.
the default theme might fool you; it's absolutely hideous.

How could one use Thunderbird or KMail for reading cron's reports?

I don't use either one of those so I can't be too specific but you would probably first need to configure cron to email its' report to you and then configure your mail reader by adding your personal inbox as a mail account. The utility 'mail' by default goes to your inbox. Hope that helped. Just type 'mail'. to quit the mailreader type 'q'.

It is already configured that way. But where is the inbox stored, i.e. what are path and filename to get at it?

I voted for KMail. I mean KMail-trinity. It's lightweight and works well and invokes nostalgia. KMail has been around since 1998.

Way back when, I really liked KMail, but over the years as more and more e-mail, until the point that almost all of the e-mail I received became HTML, I found KMail couldn't display or forward HTML e-mail properly. Last I check it still couldn't.
Is that still the case?

No. Just tried it, one click, works like a charm. But this is KMail2 with Plasma 5.14.5 on openSUSE tumbleweed.

<edit> I tried just displaying, no forwarding for the moment. </edit>

Forwarding as HTML works in KMail-trinity if it's forwarded as an attachment or it's redirected. If, it's forwarded inline the email is displayed as plain text.

In KMail / Plasma (latest) you have to check an option in the extras menu to be able to send html. I have it unchecked since I don't like html-mails .
