each and every (s|u|gnome-|etc.)mplayer voter here should try out mpv.
it is essentially a fork of mplayer, and has been under very intense development for the last couple of years. it is _far_ superior to mplayer, and equally lightweight.
btw, smplayer can use it as a backend.
i really hope it will win this poll, and if not now, next year.

Actually now that you mentioned it I have tried it and I can't remember having any complaints. I didn't explore too much on its capabilities, I just thought it had too few features, but maybe I should give it a try again.
