Been using FreeBSD 5.2.1 for w while without having major problems, but felt like it was time to try out the newer version. It fixed a few problems I was having, but brought me some new ones.
I have a swedish keyboard and I cannot get it to work right. It was working without any problem with FreeBSD 5.2.1 and XFree86, but not with FreeBSD 5.3 and Xorg. I\ve added the following lines at xorg.conf:
still, when starting the X-server (Gnome, for the moment) its still using the US layout. Ive tried also to configure Xorg with "xorgconfig" and "xorgcfg"(graphical). Here is the catch and possible the solution to my problem, when running xorgconfig, it comes a question regarding Xkbrules:
Xkbrules file '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/rules/' not found. Keyboard xkb options will be set to default values.
Press Enter to continue or ctrl-c to abort
So, what should I do? Using the flag "XkbLayout" " se" has worked fine since I first started with Linux and moved later to FreeBSD. I really am lost

OK, things has gotten even worse, if at all possible. It turns out that the swedsh chars (ö å ä) do not work in the console. That's bad because I do a lot of translation English - Swedish on the command line with Nano. I kept trying to find a way around it with sysinstall and I've managed to screw my console up. Running sysinstall again gives a lot of garbage and odd fonts. Some applications as MC is nearly unusable. Tried to switch back to the default console font using sysinstall, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?
Now back to the X. I can now type swedich chars. But to do so, I've to change my keyboard layout on Gnome preferences. That's just a work around though. If I start fluxbox, I can kiss my keyboard layout good bye. So basically:
1) How to make the command line/text mode usable again? I can't revert to the default fonts.
2) Still can't find an easy way to fix the keyboard on the X.
I hope I don't have to reinstall this system. Took me all night to compile a few applications....
A little bit better now. Thanks to a friend on IRC, I've managed to restore the swedish layout on the console. Seems like bash does not work well with non-english chars. We can't find a solution for this. However, if I use sh instead of bash, things work fine.
Still, Midnight Commander remains horrible on the console, as well as anything ncurses based.
Are you sure your XkbModel is pc104 (and not pc105)? For console localization see chapter 18 in the Handbook. You can blame your Midnight Commander problem on the console driver that FreeBSD uses -- cons25 that is set in /etc/ttys. You can try a different driver but no guarantees that this will improve things. Check out "man 5 ttys" for more details.
Well, I've been google'ing 'n irc'ing a lot about this issue. Ran all the odd commands that I did not even know existed, as vidfont, kbdmap, among others and it looks like I can't do much about it. Tried changing the pc104 and pc105 as you've suggested. It's either having a good looking midnight commander or an screwed keyboard layout. I'd just leave MC alone. Odd though, since I never had this problem with FreeBSD 5.2.1 or 4.10... hmmmm.
Still, one thing is getting me... I'm using gnome-terminal on X and I can't use the swedish keys (ä, å, ö) on any terminal, but it works fine on say, Mozilla or Epiphany... something spooky has got into my new BSD, that's for sure.

Sounds a bit odd but it might be worth a try. "pc101" and "pc104" (with winkeys) are usually recommended for US keyboards, "pc102" and "pc105" (with winkeys) for non-US keyboards.
Oh my, you don't say it . It actually worked really well. When running nano in X, under a terminal, the swedish characters work. It also works fine on the command line only which is the hole point of it for me, since as I said, I do a lot of translation English/Swedish, so it's just as important as actually having a keyboard for me .
