I would say all you should need to do to default to 1024x768 is remove the "1280x960" part from your Screen Section.
So from this:
Code:
#
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
...
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1280x960" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "640x480" "416x312" "400x300"
Virtual 1024 768
EndSubSection
EndSection
To This:
Code:
#
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
...
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "640x480" "416x312" "400x300"
Virtual 1024 768
EndSubSection
EndSection
If you want to be able to switch between the two resolutions without editing your xorg.conf file, if your distro supports it you can just leave the "1280x960" in the file, and switch using "CTRL ALT +" and "CTRL ALT -".
