Next Generation Package Manager - PKGNG. Is it working already?
I have run 'pkg update' without any error but subsequent search for packages return no result.
root@freebsd:/root # pkg update
Updating repository catalogue
Repository catalogue is up-to-date, no need to fetch fresh copy
root@freebsd:/root # pkg search nagios
root@freebsd:/root # pkg search mysql-server
root@freebsd:/root #
Is there any other additional configuration required for the command to work?
Thanks for helping a newbie.

FreeBSD does not (yet) provide PKGng repository, You can use PCBSD repository, set one of these in
/usr/local/etc/pkg.conf file:
Code:
PACKAGESITE : http://pkg.cdn.pcbsd.org/9.1-RELEASE/amd64
PACKAGESITE : http://pkg.cdn.pcbsd.org/9-STABLE/amd64

I am using Freebsd 9.1. Does it matter which one of the two is used? Can the packages in ...9-STABLE/amd64 be used with Freebsd 9.1 ?
Thank you, vermaden.

This is a very useful post, thanks vermaden!
Do you know if there is an ETA as to when there will be a PKGng repository offered by FreeBSD?

PKGng binaries are working well. I do note that binary packages for XFCE4 are not available.

Thanks for that, vermaden. I've discovered the mistake. The command to install XFCE as listed in the FreeBSD handbook for PKGng is incorrect. I was using the FreeBSD handbook command # pkg install xfce4 which yields no results. I just tried # pkg install xfce and that does work. Interesting.

vermaden,
Do you think I should report the inaccuracy in the FreeBSD handbook? Perhaps they're aware of this?
