new disk wrong size?

I recently bought a 120 gig hard drive and proceeded to install it on my freeBSD box.

Everything went fine, but when I mount the drive as a samba share on my windows box it reads that the drive's total size is 108 GB and that 99.6 GB are free (even though I haven't put anything on it yet!).

The other hard drive I share is a 40 gig that reads a total size of 34.7 GB with 30 GB free. I forget the "acutal" size of a 40 gig HD, but 34.7 sounds reasonable. I have also used about 4 GB on that drive, making the free space sound reasonable.

I'm confused. If there is any other information I can provide that would be helpful, let me know (and how to get at that information).

Thanks,
Greg

What does freeBSD say for size and free space?

What type of file system are you using for the share?
ext2 and ext3 partitions are by default formatted with a 5% reserve space for root.

Its formatted in whatever sysinstall formats to by default.

How do I ask freeBSD about the availible space on the drives?

df -h

Anyways it is normal for your pc to think your 120 gig drive is about 110gigs. This is due to the filesystem, some of the disk is used to handle such things as backup's, and temporary storage for reorganization of the memory blocks. Windows does the same thing etc...

UFS is the default for bsd anyways we dont use smelly ext2 or ext3 because we dont want gpl contamination.

Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/ad0s1a 248M 55M 173M 24% /
devfs 1.0K 1.0K 0B 100% /dev
/dev/ad0s1e 248M 1.3M 227M 1% /tmp
/dev/ad0s1f 35G 2.0G 30G 6% /usr
/dev/ad0s1d 248M 19M 208M 9% /var
/dev/ad1s1d 108G 2.0K 100G 0% /mnt/storage

How does a disk of capacity 108 have only 100G availible with 0% usage?

Also, shouldn't my 120 GB hard-drive have a size more around 117ish?

(thanks for helping)

Greg
