I tried already:

# wsfontload -h 8 -e ibm /usr/share/misc/pcvtfonts/vt220l.808
# wsconscfg -dF 1
# wsconscfg -t 80x50 -e vt100 1

The result is when I switched to ttyC1 (ctrl-alt-F2), I was greeted with a blank screen.

Note: this will not work on all video cards. Unfortunately, not all video cards support the uploaded fonts that wscons(4) requires to achieve the 80x50 text mode. In these cases, you might wish to consider running X.
I'm assuming you're using x86 hardware, is that a correct assumption?

Yah! Compaq Deskpro EN PII 450MHz with ATI 4MB video controller.

That's what I'm doing now, running X instead, much wider, customizable & best of all, cool.
