How can I get HDMI output for laptop at boot itself (at the login prompt)?

My HDMI output doesn't come till I startx and when I quit X, it is there.

However, when I boot I first have to login and startx at my laptop before I can see anything on my HDMI monitor.

Boot via a display manager so X starts before you log in? Probably not what you want to do.

I don't want to start X. I'm forced to start it to get HDMI output. This wasn't a problem when I used Arch.

Assuming the video hardware you have is well-designed enough to emulate HDMI as a DVI port at pre-OS hardware initialization... The DVI should be a nameable output for early KMS, or whatever the BSD equivalent is named. This is probably a good place to start: https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?...trol&sektion=1

Code:
In loader.conf(5):
     hw.vga.textmode=1
     kern.vty=vt
     kern.vt.fb.default_mode="<X>x<Y>"
     kern.vt.fb.modes.<connector>="<X>x<Y>"
That "<connector>" bit may be what you're looking for. Follow the links from the page to the VT module.
