fuzzy/distored sound with maestro3

I'm running FreeBSD 5.3 - RELEASE, every things working fine so far, except sound, i added the snd_maestro3_load="yes" to my loader.conf, and the sound started working, except it sounds horrible, fuzzy and really distorted. Im not getting any error messages, and have no idea what could be causing it.

heres my specs:
dell Latitude C800
Allegro sound card

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!
Thanks
Matt
