Ok this is a FreeBSD 5.4 install on a Dell Latitude cpx laptop.
I cannot get the console screensaver to work.
nothing comes up at all for any color screensaver.
I'm trying to use the dragon saver but I get this error in my dmesg

dragon_saver: the console does not support M_VGA_CG320
module_register_init: MOD_LOAD (dragon_saver, 0xc1839bc8, 0) error 19

I have googled a lot but only found questions and no answers.
can someone give me a hand here?

Are you getting the error message when the screensaver is invoked or during system startup?

I'm not sure how much of a "newbie" you are to FBSD but I'll throw my 2 cents in anyways! If you are using your laptop as a desktop system with X and kde or some other desktop/window manager and you spend all/most of your time in the windowing environment then you don't really need a fancy console screen saver. You could just specify "blank" or use one of the text based savers, for the odd time you boot into the console. Your window manager will have it's own screensaver setup and I assume if you can get kde to work then it's screensaver module will work without any problems!
