This is so wrong i dont know where to begin... Read this site: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO...-building.html

Make sure you follow the "NEW" way!

make installkernel KERNCONF=YOURKERNEL

reboot to single user mode (if you have access to the machine)
$mount -t ufs -a
+
cd /usr/src
make installworld
mergemaster
* Reboot to multi-user again and it should all be good.

You don't download the kernel. You would use cvsup to download the source. Which version you want depends on what version you are using. If you are using 5.2.* series and you just wanted the stable source with all security updates then you would use RELENG_5_2 in your cvsup source file. You can download the latest bleeding edge source as well.

But as advised read a bit before doing. It takes a bit of time and make sure you get understand how to do it correctly instead of having to go back and fix any mistakes.

And for the sake of everyone's sanity (including your own), please don't try to "optimize" the kernel. The default values will be just fine.
