With elevated privileges (root) using the terminal you should be able to update Zorin with:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
You'll than be prompted to type in your password and than hit Enter. The password will not show as your typing it. This is normal in Linux.
Than, update should take off.

it turned Zorin into Ubuntu which is NOT what I wanted

You should be able to go into your System Settings > Appearance> and make changes that way. You can also go into your File Manager settings and change the way your Window Manager and etc...looks to suit what you want.
To change the desktop backgrounds right click on the desktop and look in the drop down menu for 'Desktop Settings'.
What DE are you using? Gnome or LXDE?
