Zope on Ubuntu no start up

Hi all

did a bit reading to find out how to start up zope

I getting a strange error and i dont realy no what it means, any one care to tell me please.

I did the install on this link below
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=557874

Code:
root@tomatoland:/etc/init.d# /etc/init.d/zope2.9 start
 * Zope2.9: no instances found.

root@tomatoland:/etc/init.d# /etc/init.d/zope2.9
Usage: /etc/init.d/zope2.9 {start|stop|restart|force-reload}

root@tomatoland:/etc/init.d# /etc/init.d/zope2.9 stop
 * Zope2.9: no instances found.

root@tomatoland:/etc/init.d# /etc/init.d/zope2.9 force-reload
Zope2.9 doesn't support force-reload, use restart instead.

root@tomatoland:/etc/init.d# /etc/init.d/zope2.9 restart
 * Zope2.9: no instances found.
what are instances

have i installed this wrong , I have mysql, httpd, no FTP yet, not running as a production server, only a test box to learn how to use Zope before i try and create the production server with Zope on it.

So far I cant seem to start Zope, it doesn't show up in the GUI services panel.and yet the command line foxes me, I cant seem to use command services .......

TT

Hi!

Very simple explanation first:
An instance can be seen as a separate zope server, or site. You can have many instance, and each runs independently of the others. All instances will run as different server processes, and they need to have different ports (http, ftp, etc). Read more on zope.org.

To create an instance, run this command:
Code:
mkzopeinstance.py
, it should be available if you installed zope. The script will ask you some questions about where to create the instance root etc and copy the zope skeleton.

A good place for an instance is /var/zope/{sitename} or something like this.

Finally, you might need to configure init.d script/settings and add the path to your instances there - I'm not sure how this works in different distributions.

It may also be worth having a look at Plone, which is basically a front-end for Zope that makes things much easier.

My site is run on Plone / Zope (See my Sig). Debian has a package called plone-site, which installs Zope, Plone and configures a Zope / Plone instance automatically. I don't know if Ubuntu has this package or not...
