Question xubuntu + krusader: performance?

Hi!

I have started to use Xubuntu. If I try to install Krusader, synaptic will install the whole kde system along with it apparently.

Will this have any impact on performance? Or it doesn't matter as long as the desktop system running is still xcfe?

Thanks,
Agoston

I'm not sure it's entirely accurate that installing Krusader will install "the whole kde system."

That technicality aside: There shouldn't be any performance impact until you launch Krusader. The KDE libraries will only be loaded from disk to RAM when you launch an application like Krusader that needs them.

May I ask what's wrong with Thunar?

A precise answer, indeed! After all, I didn't say that I would want to *run* what I installed... But yes, that would be the point.

So if I also *run* Krusader, and all those KDE libraries are loaded: does THAT have an impact on performance?

(p.s.: as for Thunar: I've had a look, but it definitely doesn't look like a twin panel file manager that can be easily used in a keyboard-only fashion.)

Yes, of course! Running any application will have an effect on performance, and the more applications you run concurrently, the more system resources will be required. You can monitor the situation using system tools such as 'top'. You haven't mentioned anything about your hardware specs, so I don't want to speculate whether or not your computer is capable of running Krusader with good performance. The easiest way to test it is to install and see what happens.

Just for kicks, I installed krusader on my Mint Xfce system. As I type this it is using 2.2% of my 2gb RAM and 0.0% of my CPU. I do not notice any bad performance.

A similar-looking file manager with no KDE deps is emelfm2 (available in the repos). It was the default FM for early versions of SliTaz and should give good performance even on very old hardware.
